After focusing on digital illustration work since 2019, Dex is now finding their way back to working with found materials and focusing on expression and processes as opposed to a final product, all while continuing a writing practice with a focus on poetry.
Under the name MISERY GUTS (@miseryguts_), Dex worked digitally make illustrations and designs based around balance (life/death, black/white, soft/hard) and memento mori. Dex has worked with bands both local and worldwide to design posters and merch, with writers to create their book covers, and has designed tattoos. This work is often detailed and delicate with bones, flowers and hands making frequent appearances.
Although Dex loves their illustration practice, after doing it exclusively for 6 years, they began to feel claustrophobic. The itch to create intuitively and messily insisted on being scratched, so Dex picked up their practice as a multidisciplinary artist again (@itsdexterluna). They adopt “zero waste” and “process over product” approach in which experimentation, play and self expression is prioritised. Their motto is “f***ing around and finding out”.
As a writer (@dexterlunapoet), Dex has self-published an art & poetry zine called Boiled Frog (and other creeping deaths) and intends to create more in the future.
